General Statement of Duties
Supervises and participates in the work of a crew performing weed herbicide applications while maintaining safety for people, animals, and non-targeted plant material.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
Work includes managing a small crew by organizing routines, assigning work tasks, using equipment, maintaining records, communicating and scheduling with all clients, monitoring work quality and work schedules, ensuring crew safety, and providing performance feedback. The employee leads and participates in performing various landscaping and horticulture functions and equipment operations. The employee is responsible for the procurement of materials, work orders, and record-keeping for the work orders. Work is supervised by the Owners and Qualified Supervisor for adherence to instructions and established standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
Prioritize projects, assign work tasks to crew members, procure required materials, communication and scheduling for clients, file work orders, and maintain written or electronic records of projects.
Maintain and grow existing clientele.
Daily morning meetings with the Spray team should include: presentation of a safety talk, go over core values, evaluate and explain goals for the day/week, and answer any questions or concerns from the crew.
Instruct and train employees in proper work methods and standards; monitor crew work quality; ensure adherence to time schedules and safe work practices, provide performance feedback and input into performance reviews.
Perform and lead crews on applying herbicide to commercial and residential properties.
Operate all equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks such as hand tools, Mini Excavator, Skid Steer, Toro Dingo, riding mowers, ATV, and spray rig, along with all other mowing equipment.
Perform or schedule equipment repair and maintenance duties.
Maintain a clean and safe work area at all times.
Assist in the plowing and snow removal/salt treatment in the offseason.
Assist with administrative tasks, such as:
Inform clients of job progress and answer any questions.
Organize daily plans for the crew and delegate tasks to specific crew members.
Contribute to budget meetings (projections for the following year, tools or equipment needed to achieve goals, ideas for improvement of services).
Send and communicate on all project bids and estimates for clients.
Additional Job Duties
Help with small landscaping projects such as mulching, pruning, consultations, plantings, and prep.
Please note: these additional duties will only be required when all spray projects have been completed.
Recruitment and Selection Guidelines
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of work hazards, chemical hazards, FDA rules and regulations, and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned area of work.
Considerable knowledge of equipment maintenance and skill in the operation of various equipment mowers, trimmers, blowers, trailers, trucks, and ATVs.
Working knowledge of leadership skills including, but not limited to, communications, motivation, and constructive performance feedback.
Working knowledge of horticulture practices that pertain to turfgrass and ornamental plantings.
Ability to assign and supervise the work of others, provide instruction, lead a small crew, and inspire confidence.
Ability to understand and follow oral instruction.
Ability to schedule, manage, and complete work accordingly.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and clients.
Implement, maintain, and help lead to improving Lean systems.
Education Requirements
Certified Operator with Colorado Department of Agriculture or another state with the ability to receive a reciprocal license (required)
Qualified Supervisor with Colorado Department of Agriculture (preferred but not required)
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up-to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate equipment and motor vehicles, perform trades tasks, inspect the work of others, and review work for accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness.
